All hail retail! It’s that time of year again when the malls are buzzing with adrenaline-happy shoppers, trying to get the most bang for their buck. And since we’re guilty of indulging in a little sale-on-sale action ourselves, here are a few tips that made the experience a little easier for us. Ready, set, shop!
BEFORE THE EXPEDITION
- Enough is enough
Sure, LBD’s and the perfect red pumps are every Stylista’s staples. But if you already own more than two or three similar pieces, put them on your blacklist when you’re out shopping to avoid clogging your closet with repeats.
- Out with the old, in with the new
Be brutal. Go through your closet pre-sale season and get rid of anything you haven’t worn in six months, isn’t flattering, doesn’t fit anymore or has stains and holes. It’s time to revolutionize your wardrobe!
- Get clicking
Browse through your favourite stores online and take printouts of the items you like so it’s easier for you, or a busy sales assistant, to find them when you’re on the floor.
- Take the day off
Take it from us, visiting the sales on the weekend is a BAD idea. Instead, think smart and visit on a weekday to avoid getting an appendage ripped off by a mob of frantic shoppers.
- Dress the part
Pick an outfit that is comfortable and easy to get in and out of. We’re partial to a jumpsuit with a zipper and a pair of loafers or ballet flats.
DURING THE EXPEDITION
- Never say die
Sometimes, you may not find your size on the rack because somebody probably tried it on before you. Check the bin of recently tried on clothes outside the trial rooms before you give up hope.
- Walk on the wild side
Every fashion bible we know of advises stocking up on basics come sale season. We say just the opposite. Sales are a great time to snatch up an expensive statement piece you’ve been coveting, without breaking the bank.
- Take a look around
This may sound funny, but stop to take a look at what other shoppers are buying. You may chance upon something you wouldn’t have seen on your own.
- Supersize it
When faced with a sizing dilemma, remember to always go with the bigger option. A larger size can always be taken in by a tailor, whereas the smaller size is more limiting.
- Don’t let go
Of your pieces, we mean. Put something down for a second to contemplate and it could land up in another woman’s shopping bag before you know what hit you.
- Develop OCD
It’s easy for clothes to get damaged during sale season due to the hundreds of people that try them on. Give your garment a once-over for lipstick stains, little holes or frayed lining before you make a dash for the cash counter.
- Branch out
If a store does’t stock your size, ask a sales attendant to check their database to see if any of it’s other branches do. You can ask them to order it for you or even send it to your home.
- Stand your ground
Don’t be swayed by the buy-one-get-one-free offer. More often than not, you’ll end up with an additional item you’ll never wear.
- Hurry up, already
Consideration is key. Remember that there are other people waiting to use the trial room and keep things as speedy as possible.
- Double up
We all love feeling like Veronica Lodge with a bunch of shopping bags after a store haul. However, make sure you don’t leave any of your bags behind by slipping your smaller bags into the larger ones.
