‘Tis the season to be jolly! As much as we love the magic of the festive season, with it comes the dilemma of finding the perfect gift for the people you love most. And while we usually scrape by with a little help from our friends at Google, shopping for the Stylistas in our lives isn’t always that easy.
They’re already sporting the most cutting edge trends, strutting their stuff in bespoke shoes chartered in from Milan, and let’s face it, the rising cost of It bags doesn’t help the gifting situation either. And just when you think you can turn to your fail-safe no-brainer – Christmas cookies! – that you spent hours in front of a hot oven for, they’ve just begun their latest no-carb diet!
So this year, the Stylista team decided to do things a little differently and give our favourite fashion girls the gift of style in ink and paper – the hottest fashion books ever. Sit back under your Missoni blanket with a mug of green tea and one of these babies to instantly de-stress after all the year-end parties!
Anjana Sharma recommends The Green Room by Wendell Rodricks
Wendell Rodricks’ book The Green Room offers a peek into the chaos and excitement of being backstage at a fashion show – the glamour, models, champagne and couture. An insider’s perspective of the fashion world through the eyes and witty words of one of the country’s most celebrated designers, I highly recommend this book. Did I mention it’s been written by one of my closest friends?
Zahra Khan recommends: Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty by Andrew Bolton
I’ve had a decade-long fascination for the twisted world of Alexander McQueen. Arguably one of the most influential and provocative designers of his generation, the book Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty is a fine tribute to a designer and conceptual artist whose contributions to contemporary fashion are priceless. Published in 2011, the book celebrates the late designer’s extraordinary creations and examines the full breath of his career. Beautifully shot and presented, the handsome tome is a real piece of art. Perfect for the Stylista who loves an intellectual dimension to her fashion!
Tina Puga reccomends: Diane Von Furstenberg And TheTale Of The Empress’s New Clothes by Camilla Morton
A true fashion fairtytale, this feel-good read tells the story of Diane Von Furstenberg as a princess, her iconic wrap dress, her first fashion show and how she met her prince, all set against page after colourful page of quirky fashion illustrations. I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy for myself too!
Arthi Medethi reccomends: The Master of Us All: Balenciaga, His Workrooms, His World – Mary Blume
One of the most fascinating fashion reads I’ve chanced upon, this read sheds light on the secret life of Cristobal Balenciaga through the eyes of the woman who knew him best. Intimate and revealing, it paints the portrait of a designer whose vision helped change fashion for generations.
Shamita Kadle recommends Nick Knight by Nick Knight
Known for his fantastical photographs and groundbreaking creative collaborations with the world’s top couturiers, this experimental, inspiring coffee table book traces Knight’s boundary-pushing, visually arresting works that made him the man he is today. Ever an admirer of his work, I think this would make a great Christmas gift for anyone with an eye for style!
Anushka Hajela recommends: The Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls by Leandra Madine
Fellow blogger and girl after my own heart, Leandra (AKA The Man Repeller) dresses in excess. From silk parachute pants to a gold lame jumpsuit I’d sell an organ for, a heartbroken Leandra realised that the reason for her lack of a love life was the way she dressed. Been there, felt that! Read all about how she stayed true to herself and still made it into the big white dress of her dreams in this inspiring book!
Rebecca Anderson recommends: Audrey In Rome by Luca Dotti
A rare treat for an Audrey Hepburn fan, this book captures the essence of the enigmatic star’s life in the city she called home for over two decades. A travel guide of sorts, this little book is bursting with details of her favourite street-side cafes, cobbled streets, breakfast nooks and the like. Punctuated with pictures from her personal scrapbook, I can’t imagine any Stylista, Travelista or Cinephile not loving every second of it!
