It’s another year of red-hot trends on the red carpet and we couldn’t be more excited to see our favourite leading ladies in all their sartorial splendour at the Golden Globes event on Sunday (even if it meant setting our alarms and dragging ourselves out of bed at the crack of dawn!).
Armed with pens, papers and supersized coffees to boot, we ooh-ed and aah-ed our way through an entire 80-minute fashion extravaganza and couldn’t think of a more perfect way to start the day. From tulle skirts to high necklines, risqué bare backs and mermaid hemlines, we were hooked from the first sequin to the last bead! Here are the trends we spotted at the star-studded gala:
Sure we had a lot of crushes at the Golden Globes, but gowns in hot tangerine were our ultimate favourite! Emma Watson proved herself a fashion chameleon once again in this daring Dior number which looked like a gown in the front but she wore pants that could be spotted once she turned around. What’s not to love about it! Topped off with her signature pixie do and contrasting blue Vivier Pumps, this look alone sets the tone for some serious high-end glamour in 2014.
Meanwhile, Twelve Years Slave breakout star Lupita Nyong’o knocked the ball out of the park in an acid bright off-shoulder Ralph Lauren dress with a stunning cape detail, accessorised to perfection with a Fred Leighton clutch.
Colour block dropped off our radar for a while in the past year, mainly due to our obsession with prints, but the Golden Globes prove the trend is back with a bang and ready for the taking in the new year!
Modern Family star Julie Bowen looked flawless in a colourblocked, belted Carolina Herrera gown in wine and deep plum, offset by a clutch that looked like the dress’s long lost twin. She kept it classic by throwing on a pair of Choos, every fashion girl’s favourite no-brainer.
Young and sprightly, singer Taylor Swift opted for a babydoll pink Carolina Herrera gown with a black sweetheart neckline to showcase colour block’s more feminine side. An elegant updo and a dainty cocktail ring let her dress take center stage.
It’s official: beads, studs, sequins and spikes are the season’s new must-haves. No longer reserved for the punk trend, embellishment is now making its way onto delicate lace and girly separates in the new year.
The beautiful Zoe Deschanel wore what we can only describe as one our favourite looks of the year – a crop top with a full tulle skirt, both by Oscar De La Renta. Keeping with the pastel colour palette, she opted for subtle glitter accessories to bring her look to life.
Mila Kunis, on the other hand, opted for a seriously sexy Emilio Pucci dress with a high neck and open back, dazzling with embellishment down the front. The floaty skirt added a bit of femininity to the look, keeping the look from being too severe.
Our mania for all things metal got taken to a whole other level when we saw these fluid, high-shine pieces make their red carpet debut. Our inner magpies fell head over heels for Kate Beckinsale, who looked like she’d stepped off a mothership from Planet Fashion in this gunmetal-hued Zuhair Murad. Accessorised with a simple black clutch and classic Chopard jewellery, she looked stunning.
Jewel toned and metallic in one dress? We approve! Olivia Wilde and her baby bump sparkled from top to toe in this gorgeous emerald green Gucci gown, accessorised with an Emm Kuo box clutch we adore!
There’s nothing we love more than a strong print, and these babies took the cake! 2014 paves the way for fashion’s fresh take on nature-inspired prints and new-age florals.
Oh Tina Fey, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways. Starting with that to-die-for pink and black floral Carolina Herrera gown to her matching pout and Brian Atwood pumps, you had us from your first step out the limo!
Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco looked radiant in a printed Rani Zakhem Couture dress that was easily one of our favourites of the night. A snug, sexy bustier top juxtaposed with a whimsical full skirt made this dress skyrocket to the top of our lust list!
Someone wise once said elegance is the only beauty that never fades and we couldn’t agree more. With monochrome and black lace being reinvented in a sophisticated new avatar, we can’t help but gravitate towards all things classic this year.
Cate Blanchett was the picture of sophistication in this delicate sheer Armani Prive lace dress with a high neck and cap sleeves. Keeping the continuity of the theme, she opted for timeless Jimmy Choo heels and Chopard jewellery that sparkled around her ears and wrists.
It was more than Julia Roberts’ smile that won us over at the Golden Globes. We loved the actress’ classic Dolce and Gabbana gown and sparkly Harry Winston baubles. We plan on stealing this look for our own closets by layering over crisp white shirts!
