#NYFW: Trend Spotting on Day 1

The Stylista girls love nothing better than some serious trend spotting during fashion week, and we’ll be doing just that now that Fashion Week season has begun!

Day 1 of New York Fashion Week saw a mix of talented young designers, and established brands showcase their collections amidst the slush and heavy snow that’s taken over the east coast for months now. The mood on Day 1 was subdued with a lot of heavy furs and coats, whites and greys dominating the runways. The few colours that were spotted included rich sapphire tones, a touch of cheery mustard, siren-like crimson, and hints of aubergine. We’re giving you a style report with all the trends we saw on Day 1:

Indigo Hues
Beautiful sapphire and indigo hues made a splash on the runway, as seen at Costello Tagliapietra in the form of beautifully tailored trousers, rich shimmering coats at Rachel Roy and plush wrap jackets worn over brocade at Creatures of Comfort.

Colour Me Red
Be it the laser cut scarlet at Tadashi Shoji, feminine burnt auburn dresses seen at various shows, or the panelled goodness of crimson at Rachel Roy, red took centre-stage at the first day of fashion week.

The New Bodycon
Multi-panelled with mesh inserts and sleek leather details, a new age midi bodycon dress emerged at fashion week in its futuristic avatar.

A Hint of Shine
Dion Lee and Creatures of The Wind used a dose of silver shimmer scattered on airy dresses and cocktail numbers alike.

Tailored Layering
Anti Fit as a trend never really went out of style. Layered yet crisp, the look, which takes inspiration from old school men’s tailoring, is one we can’t seem to get enough of.

Trapeze sleeves
The season’s It sleeve gives to an airy silhouette. We particularly liked the versions in laser cut organza and a variety of leather finishes.

Plush Prints
Rich furs mold into ombrés and abstract prints. Keeping warm in sub zero temperatures and erratic east coast snowstorms never felt chicher than in these oversized pieces.

Pump Up The Volume
Volumnious coats and layered jackets are a key shape this season, seen in a variety of styles.

Cape Town
Floor-length capes made a dramatic appearance on the ramp in intricate laser cut versions and clean clinical felt versions.
